Mexico is as eastern Missouri city that is situated in Audrain County. As of 2010, Mexico had a population of approximately 11,543 people according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The city was laid out in 1836 and originally named New Mexico. In 1855, Mexico became incorporated as a town. Mexico was chartered as a city in 1874, nineteen years after it was incorporated.
Mexico is home to several points of interest. The city’s historic downtown is lined with multi-story brick buildings and is surrounded by old homes, some dating back to Mexico’s founding. There are several locations in Mexico listed on the National Register of Historic Places including the Audrain County Courthouse, Ross House, and the Arthur Simmons Stables Historic District. In addition to historic buildings, locations, and houses, Mexico is also home to the Miss Missouri Pageant. The City of Mexico has hosted the pageant for the past 36 years.
Mexico is located in a climate that experiences warm, humid summers and cold, wet winters. June, July, and August are the warmest months of the year in Mexico. Daytime temperature highs during these months range from the mid to upper-80s. Also, due to the amount of rainfall that occurs during these months, the summer season experiences high levels of humidity.
